UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a girl containing multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, each with their own fears and drives. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, while other scenes depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.

A World of Individual Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have large blooms growing from their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
