Vince Gilligan did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.” Now that Season 1 of the hit program coming to an end—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus. Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response It would be easy to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both. “It feels like an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it from others, and that's intentional. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.” Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show. “We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by audience chatter.” “Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes. A Pressing Query: Will Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus? Considering Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way. “We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.” On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup. “I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.” Of course, why mess with the legendary finales? “My dream is Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes. Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
