New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police shared security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
