The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.
