At a Glance

  • The home side were previously qualified to the play-offs.
  • A Ferencvaros defender own goal gives Nottingham Forest a opening period lead.

  • Forward adds a third with a sharp finish in the latter period.
  • The midfielder caps a great performance with a spot-kick.

The Brazilian attacker scored twice as the Premier League side concluded the group stage of the Europa League with a convincing win against their Hungarian visitors at the home stadium.

Forest had already secured a berth in the knockout round play-offs and entered this fixture with a slim possibility of reaching the league's elite, although they needed several results to fall in their favor.

That did not happen but this assured display will give Forest fans confidence that their team can come through the home-and-away tie to advance to the round of sixteen.

Kristoffer Zachariassen struck the post with a header inside the first 10 minutes for the visitors – coached by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from then on.

They opened the scoring in the early stages when Ryan Yates' cross was turned into his own net by the defender and added a second four minutes later – Jesus squeezing a shot in at the far post for his tenth strike of the campaign.

Jesus' 11th came soon after the restart when he made a perfectly-timed run to escape the defence and then place a shot beyond the shot-stopper.

That goal killed off Ferencvaros' hopes of making a comeback and instead Forest scored again when the excellent James McAtee scored from a penalty after a infringement by the hapless Otvos inside the penalty area on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League qualifying round lottery takes place on the final Friday of January (12:00 GMT), where Nottingham Forest could be drawn against either Fenerbahce or Panathinaikos.

"It is not just the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these guys to do collectively well, the entire team," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a good one."

Forest Analysis: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Watches On

Igor Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in Europe this season with six of his 11 goals coming in the Europa League.

His brace also means he has got a trio of strikes in his last two games and the threat of a challenge for his position in the forward line could be providing motivation.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was watching this game from the stands.

That may well have been on Jesus' mind as he was impressive against the opposition, producing two superb goals and generally being a menace to the opposition backline with his speed and runs.

Jesus was not alone in impressing, with McAtee producing his best performance in a Forest jersey since signing from the champions last summer, while the Swiss international also performed well.

Such positive showings will give Forest some renewed optimism as they switch focus to pulling further away from the bottom three when they host Crystal Palace on Sunday.

"All you can ask for is a response," added the manager.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their dedication or integrity. It is just go and show your ability.

"McAtee was very good and Dan Ndoye was incredibly lively. Jesus got another couple and these are good signs."
