The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

This news arrives just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world says farewell to a authentic original whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
